About

Jane Eckles is a central Illinois, representational oil painter, specializing in heirloom portraits. Her artistic process began as a child during frequent visits to her Grandmother’s house who always encouraged her to draw. Back then, great art was on the covers of “The Saturday Evening Post”. She studied art at Southern Illinois University and graduated with a BFA in Art Education, and The University of Houston earning an MFA in Graphic Arts. She worked for many years as a graphic designer and art teacher in Illinois and Texas.

Now, back home, her source of inspiration for her subject matter comes from the people and places in central Illinois, where she lives with her 89 year old Mother who is often unwittingly a model.

Ms. Eckles has participated in shows in central Illinois, regionally/nationally with Oil Painters of America and American Women Artists. She is currently an associate member of Oil Painters of America, Portrait Society of America, and a signature member of American Women Artists.

Artist Statement

Moments that cause me to stop and observe something poignant are my inspiration. Small things that display some heartfelt truth, especially “people doing what they do”. I want to create my impression of simple situations that engage the senses with the beauty of the face and hands.

My art-making process relies heavily on observation and drawing. Faces have a singular fascination for me as the psychology behind the surface unfolds while you pore over the features of an individual’s facial map. Getting in close to the subject is important because that is where visual truth of character resides. Older faces are quite beautiful, as a life is all laid out before the viewer and each feature detail narrates how it has been lived. Use of hands provides an authentic harmony between body and spirit.

Making art brings me a sense of contentment as well as an appreciation for the qualities of being human.
